FAQ

Renting a chalet in Chamonix

Chamonix is not a ski resort but a valley town. Close to 8,700 residents, shops open all year, a life that does not stop when the lifts close. Second homes account for 69% of the housing stock, markedly less than in the resorts nearby.

The valley runs for some fifteen kilometres, from Les Bossons up to Le Tour, and each village opens onto a different ski area. The address therefore settles more than the mood of the evenings: it settles where you will ski most days.

Homebooker follows a small number of properties in Chamonix, chosen rather than accumulated, among them a few off-market chalets their owners advertise nowhere.

Which village in the Chamonix valley should you stay in?

Chamonix centre holds the shops, the restaurants and the station. You can stay there without a car, and the Brévent departure is reached from the village itself. Les Praz and Les Bois offer a quieter setting a few minutes from the centre, at the foot of La Flégère. Argentière is for skiers above all: the village serves Les Grands Montets and keeps a life of its own. Le Tour closes the valley, more family-minded and quieter still. Les Bossons and Les Pèlerins, at the entrance to the valley, open onto wide views of the massif in a residential setting, with the centre still close by.

Are the ski areas in Chamonix linked to one another?

No, and that is what marks the valley out. Le Brévent, La Flégère, Les Grands Montets, the Balme area above Le Tour and Les Houches are separate sectors, reached by road, by bus or by train. It changes how a stay is organised. A day is usually spent on one area, picked in the morning according to the snow, the wind and the group's level, rather than by linking one to the next. Ski-in ski-out in the strict sense therefore barely exists here. What counts lies elsewhere: a ski room in the house, somewhere to park, and a way of reaching the chosen area each morning. Where the chalet comes with service, the concierge team arranges the transfer and carries the equipment.

Is it better to rent in Chamonix in winter or in summer?

The two seasons are a match for one another, which is rare in the mountains. Winter draws skiers to areas with a demanding reputation. In summer the valley becomes a base for climbing, walking and trail running, with the Aiguille du Midi and the Mer de Glace reached from the centre. The peaks do not look alike. The festive weeks and February are taken very early for winter; July, August and the ultra-trail week at the end of the summer fill just as far ahead. June and September are the best compromise. The days stay long, the valley is quiet, and the choice of properties far wider than in the high season.

Apartment or chalet in Chamonix: how do you choose?

An apartment suits a stay based in the centre. The shops, the restaurants and the station are within walking distance, and the buses to the ski areas leave from the village: it is the format that lets you do without a car. A chalet becomes necessary for larger parties, once staff need somewhere to work, or to have a garden, a spa or a pool. It is then more often in Les Praz, Les Bois or towards Argentière, in the residential parts. Day to day, two things make the difference: how far the nearest bus stop is, and whether there is a ski room. In a valley where you change ski area from one day to the next, they weigh more than they would elsewhere.
