FAQ

Renting a chalet in Courchevel

Courchevel is not one resort but several villages set at different heights. Le Praz at 1,300 metres, Courchevel Village at 1,550, Moriond at 1,650 and Courchevel 1850 differ in atmosphere, in price and in how the days are spent.

Choosing the village does not settle everything, though. Within 1850 itself, Le Jardin Alpin, Nogentil, Cospillot and Bellecôte answer different purposes: how close the slopes are, how far the shops sit, the light and the quiet you are after. Exactly where a house sits on the slope often counts for more than the altitude on the sign.

Homebooker, an agency based in Courchevel, follows these houses from one season to the next. Some of them are never advertised: those off-market chalets are passed on directly, within the limits their owners set.

Where to stay in Courchevel: 1850, Moriond, Courchevel Village or Le Praz?

Courchevel 1850 holds the shops, the starred restaurants, the hotels and the largest properties in the resort. It is the liveliest part of the resort, and the most expensive. Moriond, at 1,650 metres, keeps the sun later in the day and looks out over the valley, in a more family-minded setting. Courchevel Village, at 1,550, stays central on the ski area while remaining more measured. Le Praz, at 1,300 metres, keeps the character of a Savoyard village, with its older chalets and its lake. These four villages are linked to one another by the lifts and by a shuttle. The choice therefore rests less on reaching the skiing than on the atmosphere you want in the evening.

From Courchevel, can you reach the whole of the 3 Vallées ski area?

Yes, and it is what sets Courchevel apart from most Alpine resorts. The local slopes run between 1,300 and 2,738 metres, then carry on towards Méribel, Val Thorens and Les Menuires without going back to the car. A day can therefore start outside the chalet and end in another valley. That means setting off early and keeping an eye on when the link lifts close: a missed return ends in a taxi. For a group of mixed abilities, that scale is a real advantage. The strong skiers go far while the others stay on the local pistes, and everyone meets for lunch.

How far ahead should you book a chalet in Courchevel?

Christmas, New Year and the February holidays are taken very early, often from one season to the next. For the larger chalets in 1850, the most sought-after dates are sometimes taken again before the previous winter has ended. Courchevel's clientele is largely international, and school calendars do not line up. The busy periods are therefore not limited to the French holidays: several weeks in January and March are just as full. Early January, once the festive period is over, and late March leave more choice. A late request is still workable, provided you accept a trade-off between the village, the position and the capacity.

Chalet or apartment in Courchevel: how do you choose?

A chalet becomes necessary as soon as the stay brings several households together, a team has to work in the house, or a pool and a wellness area are expected. It also opens up the most sought-after positions, beside the pistes or in the residential parts of 1850. An apartment answers other needs: a shorter stay, a smaller party, a position close to the centre of the resort. Several high-end residences now offer services included that come close to a chalet's, concierge service among them. Two details often decide it: the number of bathrooms against the number of bedrooms, and whether there is a ski room you can reach without going back outside. The rest depends on what the stay is for.
